Max Payne 2 bổ sung thêm một số kỹ xảo so với phiên bản cũ, trong khi vẫn giữ nguyên gameplay và phương pháp thuật chuyện. Đồ họa được chăm chút kỹ hơn, với những hiệu ứng đặc biệt về mưa gió, ánh sáng và các vụ nổ. Phối hợp một cú nhảy ngoạn mục với thời gian viên đạn sẽ cho phép bạn làm những động tác tuyệt đẹp như trong phim hành động. Ví dụ, bạn có thể nhảy qua cửa sổ và bắn hạ 5 hay 6 tên địch với khẩu tiểu liên. Khi đó, những mảnh kính vụn sẽ bay lơ lửng quanh bạn, lấp lánh như những món nữ trang. Hành động sẽ được quay phim ở góc nhìn người thứ ba, cho phép bạn thưởng thức từng chi tiết của màn biểu diễn. Đây là đặc điểm nổi trội của Max Payne so với các game hành động khác.
Max Payne 2 có engine đồ họa rất mạnh. Những kết cấu phân giải cao và thiết kế thông minh của các màn làm cho các nơi chốn trong game tạo được cảm giác của các địa điểm có thực, hay ít ra cũng tương đương bối cảnh của một phim hành động.
