¬¬¬¬¬ 1Mickey Mouse has celebrated his seventy-fifth birthday. 2He first appeared in November of nineteen-twenty-eight. 3The Disney Company honored his birthday with a big party in Orlando, Florida. 4Steve Ember has more about the mouse and the man who created him.
5Walt Disney was born in nineteen-oh-one. 6As a young man he hoped to become a movie producer or director. 7But he could not find a job. 8So he decided to make animated movie. 9In traditional animation, cartoonists draw each image by hand. 10They draw picture after picture, each one a little different from the last, to create movement.
11Walt Disney believed animated characters could be just as popular as real actors. 12He decided he needed a cartoon hero. 13So he created Mickey Mouse. 14The mouse had big eyes and ears. 15He stood on two legs like a human. 16On his hand he wore white gloves.
17Mickey Mouse first appeared in nineteen-twenty-eight in the movie “Steamboat Willie”. 18He was known then as Mortimer Mouse. 19In nineteen-thirty-two, Walt Disney produced the first cartoon filmed in the full-color process called Technicolor. 20This movie was called “Flowers and Trees”. 21It starred Mickey Mouse. 22Both the mouse and Walt Disney became famous.
23Over the years, children read Mickey Mouse comics in newspaper and played Mickey Mouse toys. 24They watched the “Mickey Mouse Club” on television. 25People checked the time of day on their Mickey Mouse watches and used Mickey Mouse telephones.
26Mickey Mouse has had a lot of cultural influence. 27Too much, some say. 28But these days, products with another Disney character, Winnie the Pooh, sell better than Mickey.
29In two-thousand-four, the Disney Company will release the first full-length movie starring Mickey Mouse and other characters. 30Then, the next year, Mickey is to appear in his first computer animated film. 31Both movies will be released only on video.
32And, next summer, the United States Postal Service will start to honor Disney characters with postage stamps. 33Guess who goes first.
