  • The OEM should work, but if you want more than about 4 GB of memory, you really want a 64-bit version (and correspondingly compatible components).

  • OEM Home Premium 64-bit.

Retail is packaged for the consumer and you can upgrade them normally while OEM is for system builders and comes with the sticker for the case. The packaging is ugly, there is some upgrade restriction, and you are responsible for providing support pretty much. You will probably have to activate the Windows serial once you get it up and running... sometimes it acts weird on the OEM version.

Don't buy 32 bit... period. Home Premium is all you need unless you need a very specific feature that is only included in Professional/Ultimate. Microsoft has comparison lists on their site.

There are several decisions which you will need to make.

First of all you will need to decide on a 32-bit version of Windows 7 or a 64-bit version. If you will be using less than 4GB of RAM, you should choose a 32-bit version of Windows 7, as it will function better than a 64-bit version. If you will be using 4GB of RAM or more, then you should choose a 64-bit version, as it function better than a 32-bit version, asit will allow you to use all of your RAM.

Next you will need to decide on the version of Windows 7; Home Premium, Professional or Ultimate are the most common choices. Home Premium is suitable for most users. Professional and Ultimate contain some specific additions which most users do not need. See the Microsoft website for a full version comparison. No version is faster than another though, they are all just as fast.

Last but not least you will need to decide on an OEM or retail license. I will try to explain this short and simple. First of all with an OEM license you will purchase either the 32-bit version or the 64-bit version. With a retail license you will receive both versions. If you purchase the OEM license for the 32-bit version and you add RAM in the future, going on or over 4GB of RAM, you would need to purchase a new OEM license for the 64-bit version if you wish to be able to utilize all your RAM. Before purchasing an OEM license it is therefore good to think it through thoroughly. Another limitation to an OEM license is that it will be bound to your specific computer. If you would sell your current computer, but wish to keep your Microsoft Windows license, then this is not possible. When you sell your computer, you sell the OEM license with it. You cannot use an OEM license for your new computer and you will need to purchase a new license for Microsoft Windows. A retail license may be installed on one computer at the same time, just like an OEM license, but when you sell your old computer, you can remove Microsoft Windows from the old computer and install it on your new computer instead. A retail license allows this, unlike an OEM license. OEM licenses have various disadvantages as you have seen now, but there is one advantage to an OEM license which is that it is cheaper than a retail license. The choice is up to you.
